Child abuse in primary school children in the “Luis Pasteur” health area

RESUMEN

Con el objetivo de explorar manifestaciones de maltrato infantil en niños de 6to. grado se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal en el año 2006. El universo lo constituyeron 141 alumnos de 6to grado de las escuelas del Área de Salud “Luis Pasteur” en el municipio Diez de Octubre. Se entrevistó a un padre por niño para conocer de las variables fundamentales que permitieran caracterizar a la familia; a cada niño se le aplicó una encuesta que explora diversas manifestaciones de maltrato en el medio familiar y escolar. Se desarrollaron entrevistas a profundidad con los maestros para explorar el conocimiento que tienen sobre el tema del maltrato infantil y en qué medida han podido estar involucrados en hechos de maltrato. El 69.09% de los niños reflejaron formas directas de violencia sobre ellos, siendo la violencia psicológica la más frecuente. Se correspondieron las manifestaciones de maltrato infantil con las familias disfuncionales, índice de hacinamiento elevado, ampliadas. En nuestro estudio encontramos que la manifestación de maltrato infantil más frecuente fue la violencia psicológica.

ABSTRACT

In order to explore manifestations of child maltreatment in 6th grade children, a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in 2006. The universe was made up of 141 6th grade students from the Luis Pasteur Health Area schools in municipality Diez de October. One parent per child was interviewed to know the fundamental variables that allowed to characterize the family; Each child was given a survey that explores various manifestations of abuse in the family and school environment.
In-depth interviews were conducted with teachers to explore their knowledge of child maltreatment and to what extent they may have been involved in maltreatment. 69.09% of the children reflected direct forms of violence against them, with psychological violence being the most frequent. The manifestations of child maltreatment with dysfunctional families, elevated overcrowding rates, were similar. In our study we found that the most frequent manifestation of child abuse was psychological violence.
